What I’m about to tell you is a story that still haunts me to this day. A little information about me. My name is Katherine and this story takes place when I was in high school and only 16. Back then I was bullied a lot. It got so bad, that my family decided it was best to move and transfer schools.

The new school I transferred to didn’t go as well as I hoped for. I was easily lost in the sea of other students. I felt very alone and almost invisible.

Then one day two girls decided to befriend me. It felt so good to finally have people who wanted to talk to me. Who wanted to be my friend. Little did I know what I was about to get myself into.

At first, everything was great. They were nice to me. They invited me to hang out with them and I finally felt like I belonged.

However, little by little things started to get weird. They slowly tried to convince me to do stuff with them that I didn’t feel comfortable with. At first, it was little things, like smoke weed or go out in the middle of the night.

Over time the things started to get more and more out of hand. They wanted me to steal for them and they kept trying to get me to go out in the middle of the woods with them. I just thought it was strange.

I’ll just say that both of these girls seemed really normal at first. They weren’t popular by any means, but they weren’t super weird or anything. They seemed like really chill girls that didn’t take life too seriously. But slowly they started to show their true colors.

Slowly I started to feel a little left out. They had some secrets that they wouldn’t let me in on. They kept having private conversations without me and I felt like their conversations were about me. Especially with the way they’d look at me when they’d whisper amongst themselves.

I was beginning to think their intentions were not all that benevolent. It was during Halloween that things really started to take a turn to a truly disturbing level. They invited me out to some old abandoned house after school. They said it’d be really creepy and it’s supposedly haunted. I was like, okay whatever. I just assumed it was a quiet place to smoke pot without getting caught so I went along with it.

When I met up with them, they both had backpacks. They drove me out to the middle of nowhere in the woods. I started to suspect something seemed wrong. It looked like they were texting each other back and forth. They kept giving me odd glances. I just didn’t feel right about it.

It started to get dark as we walked out to the woods. Marlee dropped her phone without realizing it. I picked it up and it was unlocked. When I started reading their text messages, I felt an unsettling queasy feeling in my stomach. They read as follows.

She doesn’t suspect a thing.

I can’t believe we’re actually going through with this.

What if we get caught?

No one will know, she’s a nobody.

Did you bring the rope and the knife?

It became very clear that they were going to plan on murdering me. I was freaking out. My heart was beating so fast, I thought I was having a heart attack.

I stopped dead in my tracks as they continued to walk through the trails without noticing I wasn’t following. Before they realized I wasn’t with them, I took off running in the opposite way. They noticed almost immediately, but luckily I had a good 20 or 30 yards distance between me and them and I was easily faster than them. I outpaced them and as I lost them, I darted into the woods off the trail and decided to hide.

They continued to run past, not realizing I left the trail. When I realized they were far enough away, I immediately called the cops. I told them where I was and that these two girls had a knife and were planning on killing me. They told me to stay hidden and they were on their way.

I did exactly that. However, the girls eventually came back searching for me. They were yelling my name and trying to convince me to come out. At first, they tried to act as if they were my friends, saying they weren’t going to hurt me. They tried to play it off as an elaborate prank. But things took a twisted turn as their true intentions came to light. Luckily I was quick on my feet and recorded their conversation with my phone.

They shouted out how they were going to kill me and gut me like a pig. They went into detail about how they were going to tie me up and torture me. It sickened me. I felt nauseous and I thought I might puke.

The worst part was I could hear their footsteps and they were getting closer and closer. I was afraid they could hear my breathing. I practically clamped my mouth shut.

They were only a few feet away now. That’s when I heard the sound of sirens. I took off sprinting towards them as they took off running in the opposite direction. I got to the police and showed them everything. I gave them Marlee’s phone even though it was password protected, I knew they could get past that. However, it was my recording that gave them everything they needed. They found the two girls and arrested them. They both gave me death glares as they were taken away. I later had to testify against them. It was truly the most traumatic event in my entire life.

The End

The holidays… Normally I’d be overjoyed about it but ever since my mother married my new stepdad, Joseph Black, things have never been very cheerful around the holidays. Joseph himself is pompous, arrogant, ignorant, and for the lack of a better word, an asshole. His son, my new step-brother, Bradley, is even worse if that’s possible. He’s entitled, violent, prone to throwing tantrums whenever he doesn’t get what he wants (obviously, he inherited that from his father), and a bit of a psychopath who lacks empathy and enjoys torturing innocent creatures.

It’s safe to say the holidays aren’t pleasant. Not that any time spent in our house is. But Bradley will most certainly throw a hissy fit when he doesn’t get enough presents or doesn’t get the one present he wanted and of course, with the long list of toys he gave, one will most certainly be left out and that’ll be the gift he wanted most. God, I can’t stand that little brat. Meanwhile, his father will indulge him and reinforce the behavior. I can only take so much of it. If I could, I’d spend all of the Holidays in college, but I love my mother very much and I’m willing to endure a few days of torture with the Blacks, my stepfamily, to spend time with her. The irony that their last names are the Blacks and the fact that they are whiter than printer paper isn’t lost on me. Not that race has anything to do with their poor attitudes. I just found that that was an interesting bit of irony considering my mother and I are black. I of course kept my father’s last name of Knight.

Anyway, it’s safe to say, I’m not looking forward to the holidays. Driving home in this terrible snowstorm has already proven to be a sign as to how this weekend is going to end up.

I arrive home to find my mother and step-dad snoozing in the living room. I didn’t bother to wake them up as I went up to my room. The little shit’s door is wide open and I spotted him sitting in the middle of his pigpen playing video games, eyes glued to the screen, and he’s shouting obscenities at it.

I sigh and head into my room which is just how I left it and pass out for the night. The following morning I awake to the sounds of an argument.

“I don’t want to go. Their family is a bunch of weirdos,” Bradley’s voice echoes through the hall. The last thing I want to wake up to.

“Bradley, it’s just an evening. You’re going,” his father asserts. Then Bradley screams and things go crashing as he throws a tantrum. I grab the pillow and cover my ears with it.

I finally pull myself out of bed and get dressed before walking out to see my mother getting things ready for the trip to my grandmother’s.

“Good morning, sweetie.” She pulls me into a hug. “How was the drive?”

“Terrible,” I say. “Mother nature chose to bring on the snowstorm during the hour and a half it took me to drive home. It was a complete whiteout.”

“Morning, Jazmin,” my step-father says in a stiff tone as he walks in and kisses my mother.

“Morning, Joseph,” I say right back in an equally stiff tone. His face never wavers from its perpetual scowl.

We eat breakfast as Joseph goes on and on about how he’s the only one who’s competent at his job and everyone else who works there are a bunch of useless sacks of garbage. I try my best to drown him out. I still can’t quite figure out what my mother sees in him. Bradley eats his way through a mountain of pancakes in a pig-like manner, getting syrup everywhere. After breakfast, I withdraw to my room where I spend the rest of the day hidden away.

We eventually head over to my grandmother’s where all my relatives are bunched up in her cozy but far too small house. My grandmother greets us with a merry smile and she of course says I’m way too thin and accuses my mother of starving me. My cousins, all of whom are children, flutter around me like bees around a flower. Not that I mind, I love my cousins. They’re all adorable even if they have way too much energy. I keep an eye on my step-brother to make sure he doesn’t bully any of my cousins in which I have caught him doing in the past. I spend most of the night keeping my cousins entertained before we eat a huge dinner. Bradley throws a huge fit when my mother politely asks him to finish what he has on his plate before going for dessert. Then he has a meltdown when he’s asked to help clean up. I’ve never been so embarrassed in my entire life as he screams obscenities. I can just tell my uncle Lavell would love to take him out back and introduce him to his belt by the look on his face. All of my relatives give me a sympathetic look and hate my step-family just as much as I do. My grandmother gives me a present as we go to leave. It’s a book that was one of my grandfather’s favorites. She knew how much of a book worm I am.

When we finally get home, I unwrap it to find a really old leather-bound book that has no title. I opened it once I came into my room and read through the table of contents. Apparently, it’s all short stories. One story really caught my eye. A tale of Krampus. It is the holiday, after all, might as well give it a read.

“My name is Macy Robertson and what I’m about to tell you is not just a tale, but the truth. And it is a terrifying experience that is quite hard to believe, but every bit of it is as real as the paper I write on. I’m an orphan and I spent most of my childhood at Saint Brigid’s Orphanage. My stay there was for the most part pleasant. Our guardians, Sister Renata Garcia and Father Isaac Gordan were two of the kindest people you’ll ever find. Sister Renata was an elderly plump woman with white hair but had a very kind heart and a motherly nature about her. Father Isaac came off as a stern man, but he was just and fair, and deep down, we all knew he truly cared for us.

Now, not everything was peachy perfect. Some kids were truly despicable in the worst way. There was a boy named Declan Roberts who was the most entitled, disrespectful, and rude boy you’ll ever come across, although another boy named Finley Porter was even worse if that’s possible. There was something not quite right about him. He was the kind of boy that enjoyed cruelty and got off on torturing poor helpless animals.”

These two boys sound a lot like Bradley, cruel, entitled, and disrespectful. God, I still can’t believe how embarrassing he was at the party. His tantrums are the worst.

“As if they weren’t bad enough, there was also Renee Bates. She’s a psycho. She has the audacity to be kind to your face only to stab you in your back as soon as you’re not looking. When I first arrived here, she was the first to greet me with open arms, however, as soon as Sister Renata took a liking to me, Renee spread a rumor about me saying I burned my own house down and my family disowned me for being crazy. Fortunately, she has a reputation for being a liar and I was still able to make friends with a boy named Enzo Watson and a younger girl named Aya Gill. The three of us stuck together and became close friends.

As the holidays came closer, something seemed off. Both Father Isaac and Sister Renata seemed a little worried. It was as if they were expecting something. They told us all sorts of stories about a demon named Krampus who took bad children. I think they tried to scare us into being good, but it did not work on Declan, Renee, and Finley.

Meanwhile, the three of them were at their worst. Finley had killed one of the cats I was so fond of. We don’t have any proof that it was him, but everyone knows it. The poor thing was strung up by a noose. Declan on the other hand was making everyone miserable. He’d purposely go out of his way to be extra cruel to the rest of us. He’d try to single out Enzo when he’s all alone. Make remarks to Aya and me about any little flaw he could find, always attacking our insecurities. Of course, Renee was always with him and helping him. It was to her delight to see the rest of us suffer. Always spreading lies and rumors about the rest of us, while Finley would plant dead animal carcasses in our beds and he’d try to get us alone so he could physically hurt us. Enzo, Aya, and I had to always stick together.

Father Isaac and Sister Renata, as kind as they were, didn’t seem to notice any of it. Which I find hard to believe. However, they seemed to subtly treat Declan, Renee, and Finley as if they were marked or something. They’d have that sad look on their faces whenever they talked to them or punished them for doing something horrible. It’s as if they knew something was going to happen. Little did any of us know, something was going to happen.

As Christmas came, we all were excited to see what we’d got from Saint Nicholas. I had found an adorable little teddy bear in my stocking along with a diary in which of course I’m writing this all down. However, Declan, Renee, and Finley all threw a fit when they received nothing but coal in their stocking. They gave everyone hell for it. None of us could enjoy our presents.

I was in tears when I came back from breakfast to find my teddy bear torn to pieces. Luckily they didn’t find my diary, however, both Aya and Enzo’s gifts were destroyed too.

Now here’s where things get scary. That night, we all got in our beds as any other night. Sister Renata seemed to wish us all goodnight. She took one last look over to Renee before heading to the boys’ room.

I had barely fallen asleep when I was awoken to some eerie clapping noise echoing through the halls. It sounded like hooves. Aya heard it too, for she shot up from her bed. The clapping grew louder and louder. My heart started to beat faster. We heard the creak of a door across the hall to the boys’ room. There were screams. Aya jumped and rushed over to my bed. She was crying.

We heard both Declan and Finley screaming for their lives. We heard them plead and beg before being muffled out. My hands started to sweat, but the air seemed to chill as the windows became covered in frost. We could see the steam of our breath. Suddenly the door creaked open.

A long-clawed hairy hand wrapped around the door. It was not human. Its skin was a sickly leather texture. The door swung open and what met us was truly horrifying. It couldn’t be anything other than a demon. Great long horns shot out from its head. It wore a cloak like Saint Nicholas, but it was tattered and had dark red stains in it. It also had a white beard, but it had been tinted red around the mouth where fangs tinted black lurked. Burning red eyes seemed to bleed out from a hood. It was like some kind of twisted Santa. It stomped into the room carrying a giant red bag over its shoulder. The bag seemed to have what could only be children inside it. They were moving as if they were trying to escape it. I grabbed Aya and held onto her, trying to keep her safe from this monster.

However, it didn’t bother with us. It gimped into the room and stopped at the end of Renee’s bed. She was mortified and screamed as the demon grabbed her by the ankle and dragged her off her bed and into the air. He opened his bag as she screamed, cried, and pleaded with it, but he said not a word and dropped her inside before closing it shut. Her screams were silenced. He then took the coal and ate it before its eyes fell upon us. It took one sniff at us and then gimped out of the room. As it left, I felt like I could finally breathe. Krampus does exist.

Ever since that night, I made sure to be as kind as I could. You never know who or what is watching you.”

I closed the book as my heart was pounding in my chest. What a story. I stowed the book away and fell asleep. As Christmas arrived, to no surprise of my own, the tree was flooded with presents and most of them were for Bradley. His father had outdone himself and yet, Bradley still found something to complain about. He threw a tantrum about not getting the game he wanted with the console his father bought him. What a spoiled little brat. However, no one expected him to open up a chunk of coal. Even my mother thought I gave it to him. I had nothing to do with it. I found it rather eerie, to be honest. Especially after reading that story.

For the rest of the day, Bradley spent it in his room, playing his new console while I helped my mother cook, while Joseph spent his time down in his man cave. We prepared a huge dinner and spent a good amount of time catching up. Turns out things aren’t well in paradise. She and Joseph have spent a lot of time arguing recently. He thought it’d be best if they’d move out west to be with his family and she didn’t like the idea of leaving our family. Regardless, that argument created a lot more arguments and they found themselves nagging at each and every little thing the other did wrong. She told me all about how he continues to criticize everything she does and how nothing is ever good enough for him. It made me wonder what exactly she found so attractive in him, to begin with.

Dinner was a complete and utter disaster. My mother and Joseph spent it arguing while Bradley played on his handheld for most of it until he threw a fit when my mother asked him to put it away. By the end of it, my mother was in tears. I helped her clean up and she went to bed early that night. I followed suit.

At some point, after I had fallen asleep, I was rudely awakened by a load crash. It was oddly freezing in here. I could see my own breath. I rushed out of my room to hear the sound of loud clapping. It grew closer and closer as my step-father stormed out of their room downstairs, baseball bat in hand. He marched out from the hallway across the stares to where the clapping seemed to grow closer. I heard him scream which was followed by another loud crash.

My heart was beating faster as I stood at the top of the stairs, trembling. What the hell is going on? Did someone break-in? Is Joseph okay? That clapping seemed to get louder and then I saw a clawed leather hand wrap around the side of the entryway to the Dining room from the living room. My heart froze as tears started to fall from my eyes.

Out from the dining room stepped a figure with long horns draped in a tattered and torn Santa style cloak. It had a long white beard that seemed to be stained in red. I heard my mother scream as she came out of her room. It looked up at me with those burning red eyes and long black-painted sharp teeth. It then made its way up the stairs. I backed all the way down the hall until my back met the end of it. It gimped closer with its hooved feet, towering over me as its horns dragged across the ceiling making a horrifying scraping noise. I was still at a loss for any words and frozen in place. It was as if it crawled out of that book. Krampus was the title.

It stopped before it got to me and turned to Bradley’s door. It opened it and I heard Bradley scream out. He cried and pleaded as I heard him struggle and then he went silent. The demon gimped back out of his room, chewing on a black lump of coal with a red sack slung over his shoulder and I could see the shape of a chubby boy trying to claw his way out of it. I heard the clapping sound slowly disappear as it left our house.

After I was able to pull myself out of my shock, I rushed downstairs to find Joseph dead, his head was twisted unnaturally. We couldn’t quite explain it all to the police after my mother called them. Neither she nor I mentioned Krampus. The report that was filed mentioned a figure in red, attacking Joseph and kidnapping Bradley. I still don’t know what happened to Bradley. One thing’s for sure, I followed that girl’s advice and made sure to treat everyone with respect. You truly don’t know who or what is watching you.

The End.

You know those stories people tell their children to make them behave? The bedtime folklore tales that always have a message of being kind or some other bullshit? I always thought they were a load of crap. That is until one year when something terrifying happened that changed my beliefs forever.

I’m a senior in high school and I live with my mother and little brother. Our father died when I was 12. He was in the military when he was killed. My little brother who’s now 13 was too young to really form any significant memories with our father so he had to rely on mom and me to learn who he was. My father was a huge lover of mythologies, folklore, and whatnot. He’d tell me stories when I was young. He always had the most interesting tales. I always enjoyed the Christmas ones.

He’d tell me of Krampus, the demon who punished children who misbehaved. There was the Yule Cat who ate children who were lazy. Perchta is a goddess that punished the wicked by digging out their insides and replacing them with straw. Hans Trapp, a scarecrow who ate children. Père Fouettard, the butcher who also eats children. A lot of them eat children apparently. There was also Grýla and The Jólasveinar. Grýla was like some kind of Icelandic Ogress who also just so happened to eat children that didn’t behave. Imagine that. The Jólasveinar were Grýla 13 troll children. They were my favorite. They would often cause mischief and mayhem. They stole things and caused trouble around Christmas time. They’d also scare misbehaving children. I’m sure they probably ate them too. But they’d also give good children presents, leaving them in their shoes for some reason.

The importance of what I just told you will come into play later on. If you let me tell you a little story, you’ll understand. Whether you believe me or not is up to you.

It all began with my brother and me. Because my father died, our mother had to pick up extra work to provide for us. She was never home, which is understandable. Now, my brother, Sebastian isn’t exactly the most popular kid in school. He’s meek, kind of feminine, and for a lack of a better word, soft. None of that is bad, but it just made him an easy target for bullies. I had to always stick up for him. Not that I minded, he’s my brother after all. However, there were a few kids who really went out of their way to make my brother’s life hell. Mostly just this little shit named Franklin Hart. His older brother just happened to be in my grade, whose name is Hunter. Hunter is the biggest asshole in school and always hung out with his two goons, Tucker Rogers and Kelvin Gardner. I couldn’t tell you how many times the three of them were in detention for picking fights with other kids.

Anyway, it wasn’t until Christmas break finally came, where things took a terrifying turn. I was at work in the mall. I was a sandwich artist. My little brother usually hangs out in the mall while I’m at work and he’d spend most of the time at the arcade where Sarah, a really beautiful girl in my class works, sometimes he even helps me close or he’ll spend some time working with Ms. Thompson who runs a clothing store not far from the food court. I can’t blame him, she’s very attractive. She even gives him free clothes for helping. He also helps the janitors Clint and Dean clean up. Most of the people who work at the mall love Seb, he’s always willing to help. Security guard Billy has a daughter and a son around the same age as Seb and they’ve become good friends. The workers at the mall have all become a kind of community. They’ve become somewhat of our extended family. After I finished work we’d cut through this trail behind the mall in the woods to our house.

One evening I had just closed up the shop and punched out when I saw Franklin and Hunter along with Tucker and Kelvin picking on my little brother.

I quickly marched over there. “Does it really take 4 trolls to beat up a 13-year-old?”

I pushed my way in between Sebastian and the asshole squad. “Look who it is, the sandwich artist.”

They all had a good laugh, thinking that was funny. “Well, at least I work. When are you 3 going to stop being a bunch of lazy shits and finally get jobs? That’s what you do when you become an adult.”

Hunter stepped up. He wasn’t very tall, but he acted like he was a giant. “You think you’re funny, don’t you?”

“There’s nothing funny about being a deadweight to society,” I said, I wasn’t afraid of them, but I was being way too bold. Especially seeing how it was 3 and a half vs. me and my brother and you can’t really count my brother.

“Yeah, because making sandwiches makes you citizen of the year,” Kelvin said as they all laughed.

“Good one,” Hunter said.

“Well, people need to eat,” I said. “And what have you all contributed to society?”

“Is there a problem here?” asked Billy the security guard. He’s a good guy. He always gets the same sandwich for lunch. A meatball sub with just mozzarella cheese and loaded with jalapeno peppers.

“No problem at all,” Hunter said, then he slammed his elbow in me as he and his cronies walked by. “Watch your back.”

“You know that’s impossible right? Unless I have a mirror or something I can’t physically watch my own back,” I retorted back, but they didn’t acknowledge it.

“Thanks, Billy,” I said.

“Hey, no problem. I hate those kids. Always giving me problems. Besides, you make the best meatball sub around. If you end up in the hospital who’s going to make my lunch?” he said with a smile. There really isn’t anything to a meatball sandwich. Doesn’t really take much talent to put balls in a bun, but I smile. “Well, you kids better get home. It’s getting late. Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas to you as well. Give the wife and kids a hello for me. Tell Kayden and Samantha I might have a few broken cookies that need to be disposed of if they’re ever in the mall while I’m working,” I said.

He laughs. “Will do.”

“Come on Seb, let’s get home,” I said as we made our way to the back of the mall. As we left I noticed Hunter and his friends lingering outside. Yep… They were waiting for us.

I told Seb to run and we took off in the woods through the snow. Luckily the trail had been packed down from us. They chased us in the woods. It wasn’t long before they caught us. Seb’s rather slow. It didn’t help that he tripped midway down the trail. I grabbed him and pulled him behind me as the goon squad caught up to us.

“Not so tough now that you’re all alone,” Hunter said. Off in the distance of the woods, we all hear the breaking of branches. Everyone’s attention gets drawn to the noise.

“What was that?” Franklin asked.

“Who cares,” Hunter said, taking a step towards us, but he’s now not the one I’m worried about. Behind them, something quite large looms in the darkness. Glowing yellow eyes with slit-like pupils that seem to float in the air as they drift from Kelvin to Tucker all the way to Sabastian and me. My heart starts to thump as whatever that thing is seems to open its giant maw showing large fangs and in one swift motion it engulfs half of Tucker’s large troll-like body. All that showed was his legs. Kelvin let a blood-curdling scream loose as he turned around to witness the horror.

I grabbed Seb and ran down the trail. I could hear Hunter, Franklin, and Kelvin take off after me. Shouts were heard along with an unsettling bone-crunching tearing noise as that thing ate Tucker.

I took one look back as the others ran behind us. To my horror, I saw that thing swipe a hugged clawed paw at Kelvin. Its sharp dagger-like claws ripped through Kelvin like scissors through paper. I grabbed Sebastian and pushed forward as Hunter and Franklin screamed at the horror of their friend being devoured by that monster, whatever it is. It’s too dark to make out any defining features besides its black hair.

Soon it continued to chase after us. I couldn’t help myself as I looked back and saw Hunter push his brother out of the way as he tried to run for his life. The thing pounced on his brother and tore him to shreds. Blood painted the snow as that creature ate him.

I grabbed Seb, practically lifting him off the ground as I sprinted as fast as I could down the trail. Then my heart sank into my intestines as my shin caught on Hunter’s foot, sending me to the ground. Seb stopped in his tracks as he rushed back to me while Hunter continued to run down the trail. I rushed to my feet, grabbed Seb as I turned around to see that thing only a foot from me. A leg hung out from its mouth. I pulled Seb behind me as I stared into its glowing yellow eyes. It inched forward and sniffed me. I realized what it was. It was a giant ferocious cat. It was bigger than a bus. My heart was pounded and I shut my eyes expecting the worst.

Minutes passed. I heard screams echo through the woods. I opened my eyes to see it was gone. I looked around and didn’t see any signs of it. I grabbed Seb and we ran down the trail. We found what could only be Hunter’s leg in a bloody mess and didn’t need any other hints to guess his fate. Could it really have been a giant cat? Why didn’t it eat Seb and me? Did that mean the old folk tales were true about the Yule Cat? Either way, one thing is for sure, I will take the old warnings more seriously and pay a little more attention to how I treat other people and I will always make sure to help out anyone in need from now on. You never know who or what is watching you.

The End.

Do you believe in the old Christmas folklores they use to scare children into being good? I’ll admit that I was never a true believer. At least not until one Christmas when something truly horrifying happened that still haunts me to this day.

I grew up in foster care and it was truly as bad as people say it was. One particular foster care family I was placed in was really terrible. Randy and Amber Willis were truly despicable people. Amber was easily 10 years older than Randy and had wrinkled leathery skin from smoking too many cigarettes and spending too much time out in the sun. Randy on the other hand looked like he took way too many drugs. He was always strung out on something. His face had a permanent 5 o’clock shadow with a giant mole on his cheek. His teeth were an indefinite shade of yellow. They were druggies who were using the system to fund their addictions with money that was supposed to be used to care for the children they took in. To make matters worse, there was a boy about my age who lived there who wasn’t quite right. I swear he had the potential to become a future serial killer. His name was Blake Kane and was particularly psychotic. He has slick red hair and pale sickly-looking skin.

Things weren’t all bad. 3 other kids I grew up with became lifelong friends and more. Laney Moore was almost 18 and was the closest thing we had to a mother. She looked after us and made sure we all got food. She was 3 years older than me and very pretty with silky brown hair, warm ivory skin, and sparkling brown eyes. Her smile can brighten up any room. Then there was Kaitlynn Morrison. She was only 8 years old who usually kept her hair in braids and she’s got very dark chocolate skin, but a very cheery smile. She’s very smart. She definitely read more books than I have and I’m about to turn 15 soon. Lastly, my best friend Dillon is a bit of a wiz when it comes to all things lore, comics, sci-fi, and horror. He’s got messy brown hair, short and skinny.

The 4 of us looked after each other. We had each other’s backs. We had to because our foster care guardian’s certainly didn’t care for us and with Blake lurking around every corner, we had to protect each other.

Anyway, as Christmas came up we tried to spend as much time out of the house as possible. Luckily it’s not a far walk from the house to downtown. So we’d spend most of our time in the city.

Dillon was going on and on about all the creepy lore that surrounded Christmas as we made our way through the park. “I found the Yule Lads rather interesting. A bunch of trolls who cause trouble for bad kids. Everything from stealing to murder. And then there’s the Yule Cat which eats little children who were lazy and didn’t receive new clothing from their parents. Of course, there’s Krampus who would kidnap and beat kids who were naughty. Or maybe he’d kill them, I’m not sure. And then there’s my favorite. Perchta. She can either appear as a beautiful woman or an old ugly lady. She rewards good kids with silver coins and murders the bad ones by pulling out their entrails and stuffing their insides with straw or trash or something like that.”

“Ewww that’s gross!” Kaitlynn whimpered.

“Seriously, Dillon? Stop trying to scare Kaitlynn,” Laney said, rolling her eyes.

“I wasn’t! I just find it all fascinating. Don’t you?” he asked.

“Not at all,” she said.

“Come on, you have to admit it’s at least interesting,” Dillon said.

“If you’re into that crap that’s messed up,” she sighed.

“What about you, Dom? You think it’s cool, right?” he asked.

“Yeah, sure whatever,” I said, not really listening as I watched this old lady who looked homeless get harassed by several kids. I recognized them from school. Caleb, Steve, and Greg. Bunch of assholes. I couldn’t help myself. “What kind of assholes pick on a defenseless lady?”

“Man, why did you have to say that? Now they’re going to harass us,” Dillon sighed.

“Oh look who it is. Dom and the rest of the ragamuffins,” Caleb said as the 3 of them stepped away from the lady and gave us their full attention.

“Aren’t you three late for your parole meetings or something?” Laney asked.

“Laney, when are you going to ditch these three and get with a real man?” Caleb asks as he steps up to her.

I step in between them as he tries to place his arm on her. He cried out as the lady whacked him with a stick across his knuckles. “What the fuck you stupid bitch!”

“Hey, what’s going on over here?” A police officer asked as he strolled up to us.

“Nothing,” Caleb said awfully quickly. “We were just leaving.”

He and his minions quickly walk away. The officer gives us all a suspicious look before walking away.

“That was awfully kind of you 4 children,” the old lady said with a crooked grin that made us all cringe. She had a crooked nose with warts on her face and what little teeth she had were yellow. Something about her really creeped me out.

She then pulled out 4 silver dollars and gave them to us. “Take these for your trouble. Not many people go out of their way to help an old lady anymore.”

She then started to make her way down the alley and before we knew it she was gone.

“Well, that was weird,” I said.

Dillon just elbowed me. He gave me a wide-eyed look. I sighed. “If you’re trying to tell me that lady is Perchta, please save your breath.”

“You have to admit it was odd. She gave us silver coins,” he said. I sighed even longer this time.

“Come on, we should get back, it’s getting late,” Laney said.

As we made our way back to the house, we found Blake lurking in the shadows. He was crouching over something. Kaitlynn let out a scream and pointed at his feet. It was then we saw the bloody mess on the ground.

“What the fuck Blake?” I asked as Laney covers her mouth with one hand and pulls Kaitlynn away with the other.

“What? You don’t like it? I was thinking of using its remains to decorate your rooms,” he said with a smile that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

“I swear to god, Blake, if I find any animal parts in any of our rooms, I’ll…”

“You’ll what?” he asked, interrupting me.

“Just leave our rooms alone,” I said and we all hurried inside. We all headed up to our rooms. Dillon and I shared a room while Laney and Kaitlynn shared the other room. They made Blake live up in the attic after all the creepy shit he tried to do to us while we were sleeping. It’s still hard to get a good night’s sleep in this house. You had to sleep with one eye open. But at least Dillon and I didn’t have to deal with Randy. He’d always try to sneak in Laney and Kaitlynn’s room after getting all fucked up on whatever he could find. Laney would do whatever it took to protect Kaitlynn and I’d do whatever it took to protect her. I called the cops on more than one occasion, but nothing ever happened. Amber would always say we were deranged juvies who lied to get out of trouble.

I never understood why Amber put up with Randy. Especially with all the bruises, he gives her. Of course, she’s no better. A fucking witch if you ask me. While Randy’s more physically abusive, Amber’s more verbally abusive. She always tells us how worthless we are and if it weren’t for the money they’d get from the state, she’d have kicked us out a long time ago.

Anyway, Laney and Kaitlynn have been sleeping in our room. I’d let them have my bed and take the floor. Sometimes Dillon would sleep on the floor and let them have his bed. We traded.

As Christmas came, we all gave each other gifts because there was no way we’d get any from Amber and Randy. None of us had any money, so our gifts wouldn’t be of the highest quality. Kaitlynn would always give us her sketches which had gotten better over the years. Dillon always gave us cookies and candy he snagged from the youth centers. I tried to get them each something special, but it would usually be whatever I could steal. Laney was the best at gifts. She’d always find a way to get us something we always wanted. Most of the books Kaitlynn had were from Laney. She’d got Dillon the latest handheld video game once. He was stoked. She got me my first skateboard. Of course, the fact that she had a job at Walmart helped. She only worked there on weekends though, so it’s not like she was just rolling in the doe. I know she hides money away and saves up for months to get us gifts.

Blake would give us gifts too, usually dead animals he’d kill or vague threats in the form of creepy letters. Nothing scares you more than finding a dead bird lying on your pillow with a cryptic note about how it could’ve been you. We constantly lived in fear for the day when Blake finally snaps and kills us all.

However, that day never came because after Christmas things started to get strange. It was the night after Christmas when it all started. I was sleeping on the floor at the time when I heard something that pulled me out of my sleep. I opened my eyes and froze. I wanted to scream, but I couldn’t get a sound out.

Only inches from my face was a woman I had never seen before. She was crouched over me with a smile. She was beautiful. Silky white hair, with a shimmering pale ghostly skin. Her eyes seem to glow in the dark. She held a finger against her lips. I wasn’t sure if I should be afraid or in love. She then pulled out a silver coin and placed it on my lips. I blinked and she was gone. What the fuck was that about?

I woke up the next morning thinking it was all just some weird dream. However, I found the coin. At first, I thought it was just the coin the old lady gave me, but I had that one too. What really freaked me out was the fact that Dillon, Kaitlynn, and Laney all shared similar stories of how a beautiful woman with white hair woke them up and gave them a silver coin. Truly weird.

We spent the next day outside in the snow. We went to the park and built a snowman and had a little snowball fight before coming back to find Blake watching a girl that lived down the street. My heart raced as he cornered her. God only knew what his intentions were. I quickly rushed over. “What are you doing Blake?”

“Oh me? I just wanted to show our neighbor my pet collection,” he sneered.

“Leave her alone,” Laney said as she quickly rushed over to her and got between them.

“Oh come on, don’t be like that. We were just having fun,” he said with a wicked grin. Then he walked away. God only knows what he’d have done with her if we didn’t show up.

That night, Laney and Kaitlynn once again slept in our room. This time Dillon slept on the floor. I don’t know what time it was, but I woke up to a creaking outside our room. I slowly got out of bed and crept towards the door. I cracked it open and what I saw made my stomach turn over. Creeping through the hall was that old homeless lady from the street.

She looked over at me with her toothless smile that sent shivers running down my skin. One eye was larger than the other. She held up a long hooked finger across her thin lips as she craned her head to look at me. She had one of those long crooked noses. She literally looked like those stereotypical witches that eat little kids. I slowly closed the door and leaned against it. I had no idea what to do and I didn’t want to go out in the hallway with her, but I wasn’t going to let her come in here and allow her to get her hands on my friends.

My heart was pounding in my chest. I listened as the creaking continued down the hallway. Then I heard the steps up to the attic. There was a loud crack and a scream before everything went silent. I just slid down the door as I prayed to God she wouldn’t come back to our room.

I must’ve fallen asleep there because the next thing I knew, I was being shaken awake by Laney.

“What are you doing there?” she asked. She didn’t wait for a response. “Can you please move? I have to use the bathroom.”

“No! Don’t go out there!” I stammered as the memory of that old crone lingered in my thoughts.

“What? Why not?” she asked.

“That lady from the street. The old one that Caleb, Steve, and Greg were harassing. She’s in the house. I saw her creeping down the hallway,” I said.

“Why didn’t you wake us up?” she demanded.

“I didn’t want to disturb you and I didn’t know what she’d do if I made a move. She seriously creeped me out,” I said.

“That doesn’t change the fact that I have to pee,” she said.

“I’m telling you, she’s out there. I think she went into the attic,” I said.

I climbed to my feet as Laney cracked the door open and peered out. “I don’t see or hear anything.”

“I’m telling you, she was there,” I said.

“Can you just wait out in the hall for me?” she asked.

“Are you crazy? What if that lady comes back down?” I asked.

“Dom, I really have to pee,” she said as she started to shift her weight back and forth between legs.

I sighed. “Fine. Make it fast.”

I followed her out in the hallway as she crept to the bathroom. She went in as I waited. I kept looking up at the attic expecting that old creepy lady to come down at any minute. It felt like time just stopped as I stood there. God, it was so cold in here. What was Laney doing in there? She’s taking forever. I whip around as I thought I heard something downstairs. My heart was thundering in my chest. What if she’s down there?

I heard the toilet flush and then the faucet turned on, then Laney came out. As she made her way back down the hall to my room a loud creaking noise echoed up from downstairs. I looked over at Laney to see if she heard and her eyes went wide. She pointed downstairs and I followed her finger to find the old lady staring up at us with a wicked grin. She waved her long hooked fingers at us while she brought her other hand up to her thin lips and signaled us to be quiet. I want to yell, but it’s like the air had been sucked out of my lungs.

I reached over and grabbed Laney’s hand and pulled her into the room as I shut the door and pressed up against it. I could barely see tears coming down Laney’s face. “What the fuck?”

“I don’t know. Should we call the police?” I asked.

“The only phone we can use is downstairs,” she said.

I let out a breath. “I’ll go get it.”

“No,” she said. “Don’t go out there. We should all stay here.”

“What’s going on?” Dillon asked as he shot up off the floor.

“Shhh,” Laney said, looking over at Kaitlynn. “That lady from the street is in our house.”

“What?” Dillon asked as he got up off the ground. “She’s here?”

“Yes,” I said.

“I told you she’s Perchta!” he said.

“Shhh!” Laney said.

“What do we do?” Dillon asked.

“We just need to stay here and pray she doesn’t try to come into our room,” Laney said. And that’s what we did. None of us besides Kaitlynn slept another wink that night.

In the morning we all slowly crept out of the room to find that the lady was gone. Amber and Randy were up and already high as they ate breakfast. We all waited for Randy and Amber to clear from the kitchen before snagging some food for breakfast. Nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary.

We went on as if nothing happened, trying to forget last night. We avoided the park for fear of running into that creepy lady again. Instead, we ventured out to the playground at the school. As Kaitlynn played on the slides, Dillon, Laney, and I sat at the swings. We couldn’t find the words to speak. Eventually, we returned back to the house. Amber was skulking around and leered as we came in. “Have any of you seen that psycho Blake? He hasn’t shown up all day.”

All of us shrugged. Her face grew more foul as if that was possible. “One of you go up and check for him. We’re getting a visit soon and if he’s not here… Let’s just say there will be trouble for all of you.”

We all hurried upstairs. None of us wanted to go up into the attic. Who knew what Blake had up there. However, I stepped up and made my way up to his room. As I climbed the attic stairway, I didn’t seem to find anyone up there. However, what I did find made me sick to my stomach. Animal carcasses were littered everywhere. Bones decorated the walls. There were entrails to god only knows what strewn on the floor. I thought I saw a heart that looked human. I quickly rushed out of there and threw up in the bathroom.

I told Dillon and Laney what I found and told Amber that he wasn’t up there. He didn’t come back at all that night.

However, Randy came up around 8 o’clock high on something. I heard him break into Laney’s room. I rushed out to see him wrestling her down on the bed and Kaitlynn was crying hysterically. He was fighting to pull her shorts down. She was horrified and in tears. I quickly grabbed my skateboard and bashed him over the head with it. He was out cold, but still alive. I rushed Laney and Kaitlynn into our room and barricaded the door shut.

We stayed in our room all night. Not one of us slept. And then we heard it. Creaking going on out our door. We all thought it was Randy finally waking up. I tried to take a peek under the doorway and saw those familiar rags and knew who it was immediately. It was that crazy old lady, she was back! My heart raced as I quickly backed away from the door. I looked at the others and I can tell they saw the horrified look on my face.

“What is it?” Laney asked.

“She’s back,” I breathed.

“Who’s back?” Kaitlynn asked.

“Perchta?” Dillon asked.

We all heard a nose in Laney and Kaitlynn’s room and silence took over the air. There seemed to be multiple footsteps. Was there something else out there? No one moved to check. We were all frozen in fear. My heart was racing so fast, it sounded like a drum. My hands were sweating profusely. I felt sick. What did this woman want? Was she the reason Blake had disappeared?

No one got a wink of sleep last night as morning finally came. We all stayed in the bedroom for the longest time, too afraid to leave or unbarricade the door. When we finally did, no one could find Randy anywhere. He was just gone. Vanished. Amber was furious. She interrogated us. “I heard a loud noise last night. What did you do to him? I’ll find out. I always do.”

We all escaped the house. We were back at the playground. This time even Kaitlynn was too shocked to play. We just sat there on the swings while the snow came down. No one knew what to say. When we finally did return home, Amber was passed out from some drug. We raided the kitchen before returning to our room. We barricaded the door once more. As it got late, I snuck out to make sure all the doors and windows were locked. When I turned to head back upstairs, I froze in my tracks. Standing in front of me was the old lady.

I swore I didn’t hear her get in nor did I see her when I came downstairs. The house was empty. She just held out her finger to her lips as they formed a demented smile. It was truly the most hideous thing I had ever seen. With her were what looked like children, but their skin was pitch black as the night sky and their eyes were red. They carried Amber who was still breathing and followed the old lady out of the house.

I thought for sure they’d come back for us, but that was the last I had seen of her or Amber. When we got our visit from the Child Protective services, we told them that Randy, Amber, and Blake had disappeared. We soon found out they were not the only ones to vanish. Along with Caleb, Steve and Greg, there were stories of hundreds of other people who had just vanished over the last week ever since Christmas. We were all taken to another foster care home, fortunately, we weren’t split up.

It was only years later after Laney and I had gotten married did we hear about a horrifying story in the news. They had found hundreds of bodies strung up in the woods outside of town. All of them had their insides cleaned out and were packed with leaves. Among them were Caleb, Greg, Steve, Blake, Randy, and Amber. Ever since then I had made sure to treat everyone I see with kindness. You never know if Perchta is watching.

The End.

Remember, you’re never safe in the dark…

Being a parent is never easy. We often find ourselves obsessing over every painstaking detail of our children’s lives, especially when it comes to their safety. With the internet, the world has become a much more dangerous place. I know the hard way about the dangers of raising children. The story I’m about to tell you was a nightmare that came true.

My name is Lexi and I’m a mother of the most amazing daughter any parent could ever ask for. She had just turned 14 and I couldn’t be more proud of her. She was on the dance team and an honors student. Life hasn’t always been perfect, we’ve had our fair share of arguments, but even with our feuds, I would give anything to keep my daughter safe. That’s why what I’m about to share with you is beyond the worst moment of my life.

It was a day in the fall where school had just started up. Even though my daughter was involved in several after-school activities she decided to take the bus home real fast to get something to eat and change before going on to her dance practice. I worked from home and I remember this day perfectly. I was watching the news at that moment in the afternoon. They were going over a brutal murder.

“What we are about to share with you is not suitable for kids. Police have discovered the body of Calvin Nichols this morning. The MO follows closely to 3 other murders. It seems the man had been subjected to some kind of compound that turned his skin a dark blue. It seems he was tortured. They’re in the process of running an autopsy. However, what links this with the other 3 murders is a junk drive that was wrapped around his neck. They found a video of the victim who was under duress but admitted to sexually assaulting 4 teenage girls. These murders seem to be similar to the Ghost murders, however, the difference is that in these cases, the victims were subjected to chemical compounds earning this killer the name The Chemist. Each victim was either registered sex offenders or was charged but never prosecuted with sex crimes,” the reporter said over the TV as I quickly made my daughter a salad while watching the window for her arrival. Whenever she takes the bus, she always gets dropped off at the corner of the block which is a few houses down.

I remember something was off that day. There had been a white van parked down the street. It just looked out of place and I remember seeing it there a few times before. It just looked suspicious. If only I had reported it to the police…

The bus finally pulled up and my daughter got off as normal. She had her sporty outfit on with a matching pink shirt and pants. She radiated with happiness which filled me with joy. I was just imagining what kind of day she had at school, hoping it was a good one. But then she came across the white van. Her face contorted in fear as the side door slid open and a man in a mask grabbed her and yanked her in. I dropped what I was doing and screamed.

Panic gripped my heart as I grabbed my cell phone and rushed out the door as the van started to drive off while I called the police. It felt like I just got stabbed in the stomach. I could barely form words as the van drove off. It had no license plate on it. I was hysterical as I tried to tell the operator what had just happened. I could barely form a coherent sentence. I had just watched my baby girl get taken. My heart was racing so fast, I thought I was having a heart attack. I couldn’t breathe. The operator was telling me to calm down as another car drove by as I frantically told the person on the phone that they took my daughter. Tears were falling down my eyes as they said they were sending a patrol car over now.

After I got off the phone with them, I quickly called my husband and tried to tell him everything. He said he was on his way home. I felt like the air had been sucked out of my lungs. I was in shock. It felt like some horrible nightmare. The police arrived just before my husband. I frantically told them what happened. A few more police showed up and I believe one of them was a detective. I remember her name. It was Hallie Everett. She was very calm and went over the details. My husband was a complete mess as he paced around, trying to pull out his hair.

Detective Everett said they put out an APB on the van and they’d do a thorough investigation as if that would make us feel any better. Our daughter was taken by only god knows who for who knows what means.

“You need to find her. You need to find her,” I said hysterically. I felt like everything was spiraling out of control. They told us to remain here in case she or her kidnappers tried to contact us. James, my husband wouldn’t just stand by as some maniac made off with our daughter. He took his truck and went out to search for her while I waited by the phone, praying to god to hear her voice one more time. They stationed a patrol car outside our house. Praying desperately not to hear the worst news any parent could ever hear. I just couldn’t face that fact. I won’t accept it. I just had to pray she’d be returned to us safely.

It was worse than any nightmare. I had to just wait there while some psychopath had my daughter. I’ve never felt more helpless in my life. Every second that passed by felt like an hour as I just stared at my phone, waiting for it to ring. I had the TV on with the news so I could have something to drown out the fears running rampant in my head.

Each and every minute that went by felt like my daughter was falling farther and farther away. I broke down and cried. I finally broke as the fears ate at me. All I wanted was to hold my baby girl. I just wanted to reassure her everything was going to be okay. God, how could this happen? She looked so happy when she got off that bus. I should’ve been there waiting for her. If only I had been there. I could’ve stopped it or at the very least I’d be with her.

Hours went by and it was well into the night and still no phone call. I was starting to lose my mind as all the terrifying possibilities burned into my thoughts. Where is my baby girl? I pray that she’s still alive. I pray that no harm has come to her. If something happened to her, I… I could never forgive myself.

Then the phone finally rang. My heart stopped as I stared at it filled with dread. The second ring pulled me out of my trance as I hastily picked it up and answered it. It was Detective Everett. They found her. She’s safe. I felt like I could breathe again. They brought her to the station.

I rushed to my car and called my husband while I sped to the police station. I met my husband at the police station where we found our baby girl. She looked so afraid and worried. She ran to us immediately as we both held her in our arms. Tears fell from my eyes as I held her tight. I never felt so relieved in my life. To have my baby girl safe back in my arms is beyond anything a mother could ever hope for. I felt so filled with joy at that moment, nonstop tears ran down my face. When we finally settled down, the detective pulled us aside. I thanked her profusely as I tried to calm myself. I couldn’t stop the tears from falling.

She then told us what happened. Apparently, someone called the police and reported the van. However, when the police arrived the scene was horrendous. They found the man that took my daughter strapped to a chair. His face had been melted off and there was a junk drive tied around his neck. They found my daughter in a bedroom upstairs with headphones on her ears. She had not been harmed.

She told them that after they arrived at the kidnapper’s house, he took her to the bedroom. She was crying and pleading with him. He took off his mask to reveal an old man with long grey wiry hair that was starting to bald. He had a thick gut and a scar on his left eye. He started to unbuckle his pants when someone broke in downstairs. He went down to investigate when a struggle broke out. A few minutes later a man she didn’t recognize walked up. He was kind, untied her and he gave her headphones and he told her to put them on and listen to music because he didn’t want her to hear what he was going to do to the man who took her. She held the headphones tight to her ears as she heard terrifying screams come from downstairs. He said all the terrible things he did to other girls, but she tried not to listen.

Before she knew it, he came back up and told her to wait here. The police would arrive shortly and she’d be reunited with her family and then he left. Not long after the detective arrived to find the perp strapped to a chair with his face melted off and he was dead. She found our daughter in the bedroom.

The news broke the story that night after we got home. They reported about the kidnapping of our daughter and how the Chemist had struck again, saving our daughter.

To the Chemist, if you are reading this, whoever you are… Thank you. Because of you, our daughter is safe now. I will never forget this. I don’t think there is anything we could ever do or say to show our gratitude for saving our daughter. To all the parents out there, just please, keep your children safe. The world is a dangerous place. If you see something suspicious, report it. Don’t second guess, don’t hesitate, take action.

The End.

Remember, you’re never safe in the dark…

My name is Emmitt and what I’m about to tell you is something that still haunts me to this day. I shouldn’t be telling you this, but I need to tell someone. I signed papers saying I’m legally not allowed to tell you, but I don’t care anymore. I don’t know if I can’t go on any longer like this.

I suppose I should start from the beginning. I’m a marine veteran. Upon returning to civilian life, I had a hard time adjusting. One thing led to another and I ended up becoming homeless. I’m not proud of it, but I’m not going to deny it either.

Anyway, after living on the streets of L. A. for some time, I’ve gotten to know many of the other homeless there. We formed a sort of community. Not all of them make it however, many die for various reasons, whether it’s drug overdose, starvation, or some kind of disease. A few of them I had become good friends with. Pete and I had become very good friends. He too was a veteran. He, unfortunately, died of a heroin overdose. Then there was Linda who was just a bit crazy. But she was harmless. I’m not quite sure how she died. Then there was poor Ricky, he committed suicide. Hanged himself over the bridge. Unfortunately, that’s not unusual with the homeless community. Regardless, no one really gives a shit about us.

Anyway, it had been over a day since my last meal and I was rummaging around in the dumpster for anything I could scrap up. Once again, I’m not proud of this, but my pride is irrelevant.

It was then that I was approached by a rather strange man. He was in a black polo shirt with thick glasses and khaki pants. He offered to buy me lunch if I heard his offer. I couldn’t deny how hungry I was so I took him up.

We arrived at a decent place and after we ordered he told me about an opportunity he’d like to offer me. An opportunity that paid very well. I asked him what was the catch, he said I just had to subject myself to a little experiment. It wouldn’t be anything serious, just a drug trial that’s all. He said the drug wasn’t dangerous or anything. I was going to decline when they told me how much they’d be paying me. I reluctantly accepted.

From there I was taken to a large laboratory that kind of had an insane asylum feel to it. White walls, white tile flooring, and a very sterile smell to it. I was taken into a room and I had to fill out paperwork and sign a nondisclosure agreement. Another man came in and gave me a full psych evaluation. He seemed very pleased with the results. He went over them with me and said that he determined that I was suffering from not only PTSD, but depression, and anxiety. I told him to try being a homeless veteran and see what mental disorders he’d suffer from.

Then a woman came in and brought me to a room with a type of bed table that had straps. I felt a panic rise in me as I looked over at the nurse. She told me the straps were a precautionary step to prevent injury. She handed me a patient gown and told me to change.

She left me alone as I changed out of my rags and into the gown. I took a seat at the table bed and waited for what seemed like forever before several people came in including the nurse. A tall thin balding man with rectangular glasses seemed to be in charge and went over what they were going to do. They said they were going to inject me with a drug they had developed that could help with several mental disorders including the ones I currently suffered from. Of course, this drug is in its early stages of development. They were testing for any possible side effects which seemed very dodgy. I thought they had to work out possible side effects before going onto human trials. They assured me it’d be harmless.

I reluctantly went through with it, not that I felt I had a choice in the matter. I felt as if at this point there was no going back, at least that’s how they made it feel. They strapped me into the table and then came back with a syringe filled with some kind of black substance. I felt a very unsettling feeling creep over me. That substance, whatever it was did look as if it shouldn’t be inside anyone’s body. Before I could object, they held me down and I felt the prick of the needle and a very cold sensation course through my body. Other than that I didn’t feel any different. They took me and put me in another room to monitor any potential side effects.

I don’t know how long I was left in that room. There were no windows or clocks. I fell asleep some time afterward. I woke up to a man in a black suit leaning against the wall. A man I hadn’t seen prior to now. He seemed mildly amused. “They gave you the injection, did they?”

I nodded warily. Wouldn’t he know if he was with the organization? He seemed like someone important. He had slicked black hair and a pale complexion. “Of course they did. If they didn’t, you wouldn’t be talking to me.”

I had no idea what he meant by that. “Do you work for them?”

“I’m an interested third party,” he said with a smile that made me feel uneasy. “I’m going to let you in on a little secret. What they gave you won’t cure your ailments. In fact, they have no idea what it does. That’s why they gave it to you. They’re hoping to figure that out.”

A sudden nauseating feeling came over me. What did he mean by that? That couldn’t be true? That had to be illegal. How could they get away with that? I felt very sick. I don’t know if it was because of what they injected inside me or just knowing that I was a guinea pig for whatever twisted experiment this was. Who even are these people? Why didn’t I think to ask that? The man leaned in a little closer with a wicked smile. “but I know exactly what it’ll do to you. You’ll see soon enough.”

The man let out a laugh before leaving the room. I don’t know how long I spent in that room. It felt like weeks. I kept waiting for something bad to happen. I thought I was going to experience pain or some kind of horrific side effect. However, nothing strange seemed to happen after the meeting with that man.

Eventually, they finally decided to let me go. True to their word, I received compensation. It was enough money to really make a difference in my life. With it, I could start a new life. I decided to really try to improve myself. Turn a new leaf. Maybe the drug did work. I was actually starting to feel better. It was as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. And then I ran into my old friend Pete and I felt my blood freeze.

The End.

Remember, you’re never safe in the dark…

My name is Camille Dawson and what I’m about to share with you is something that I’m not sure if I truly believe. My mother is very superstitious and believes in the paranormal, but I have a very skeptical mind. Anyway, let me get to the point.

A while at home at my parents’ beach house, I took a stroll along the shoreline to clear my head. I like to dip my feet in the water and while I was in the process of doing this I found a bottle had washed ashore. While I’m out I usually like to pick up the trash I find and keep the beach clean. So I bent down and picked up the bottle, to my surprise, there was a message within it. I took it back home and uncorked the bottle and wiggled out the message.

What I read was truly eerie and unsettling.

To whoever finds this,

What I’m about to tell you is truly hard to believe, but it is without a doubt real. I’m 22 years old and I took a job on a Tuna Fishing boat. I was just a newbie at the time, and we went out for my first trip. Then we hit a storm. The odd part was that the storm was not on the radar. It came out of nowhere. The storm was so bad, I can hardly believe our ship didn’t capsize. The waves were taller than our little fishing boat itself.

I was trying my best to hold on when a wave caught me and pulled me overboard. I thought for sure I was going to die. Maybe I did die. It’s hard to tell anymore. Even with a lifejacket, it was hard to keep my head above water. I kept getting pulled under. It was a vicious cycle of fighting for air and being swept under the current. The storm made it impossible to see anything. I had to keep my eyes closed the entire time.

It felt like an eternity of torment, being pulled under the surface, fighting my way back up. A constant struggle. Eventually, it came to an end and things settled down. I found myself in the middle of the ocean with only a life jacket and nothing else in sight but water. I had no idea if our fishing ship was intact or what the status of everyone else was. As the sun rose I drifted in the water, cold and shivering. Most likely dealing with hypothermia and I was starving.

That’s when I saw them. Sharks were swarming around me like flies. My heart raced in my chest. I knew I was going to die. There was nothing I could do but float there in the water waiting for them to strike as my skin shriveled up into raisins. I waited with deathly anxiety. Waited for them to bite, but they never did. Hours went by as the sun traveled through the sky. However, none attacked. Finally, the sun fell below the sky. I was starving as darkness took over and night conquered the day.

I hadn’t drunk any fresh clean water in over a day. I was coming in and out of consciousness. My thoughts became filled with desperation and delusions. The lack of any moon wrapped the water in complete darkness. Never have I ever been so afraid in my life. Sharks swam in the distance. I could barely make out that dreadful fin rise up out of the water. At this point, I welcomed death compared to the state of life I barely clung to. The fear and panic came to a point where I thought it’d be best to die and get it over with.

An eerie misty fog crept over the water to add to my disparity. But hope came at last! I spotted a ship in the distance. A cruise ship. It had the words Wilhelm Gustloff written on it. The ship seemed rather old, but I was also very delirious at that point. I waved my hands and shouted at the top of my lungs for help.

It was luck or a miracle. They took me aboard. I was saved. Or at least that’s what I thought at the time. I was greeted by several people, all worried, but welcomed me aboard. They hardly spoke English and were wary of me. They looked upon me with great suspicion and often asked me where I came from and what side I was on. I was very confused by this. I found it peculiar that most aboard spoke little English. I guessed that there were German Cruise ships. Fortunately, I took plenty of german classes so I was able to speak with them with a certain ease. After I was treated, washed, clothed, and fed, I was given a room to sleep in.

I awoke the next day to be greeted by the same faces. That’s when I noticed their clothes were rather… Outdated to say the least. I told them all about what had happened with our small fishing boat. I urged them to head back and find if there were any other survivors.

None of them seemed to listen. They said I was welcomed to the food and the rest of the amenities aboard. I did find more than a few military officers on board. That’s when I saw a Nazi symbol upon their uniforms and nearly had a heart attack. I tried to keep a calm composure. I had no idea I had gotten myself into. Nazis here? WWII ended long before I was even born. How could this be?

One of the officers spotted me and asked me for my documents. I tried to explain I was on a fishing boat when we got hit by a storm and your ship saved me. They hardly listened. I was grabbed and taken down below. They questioned me and interrogated me, but after a long time, I was put back into a room.

As day turned to night, I knew I had to get off this ship. I discovered they did not lock my door. I managed to slip out and make my way to the lifeboats. I found them to be frozen to the ship. I snuck off and found a knife before climbing aboard a lifeboat and cutting the rope, sending the boat plunging down to the waters. With a loud splash, it stayed afloat. I was free of the ship.

I watched as it sailed away in a misty haze. Now I just needed to find either another ship or land or something. As I drifted out on the sea, I fell asleep.

When I woke back up, I was in a bed on a rather large ship. They must have found me while I was sleeping. I don’t know how I slept through getting pulled onboard. I walked out and to my horror, I discovered I was back on the Wilhelm Gustloff. As I walked out onto the deck, the light of the moon shined down and what I saw horrified me. The men and women aboard were not alive, but walking rotting corpses. Then I saw my own reflection and screamed. I too looked dead. It took me a long time to realize it, but I finally came to the conclusion I did not survive the storm and now I’m trapped on a Nazie Cruise ship.

I’m writing this message to warn you to tread the waters cautiously. If you see the Wilhelm Gustloff, turn around immediately.

Yours truly,

Josiah Shepard

A chill crept down my spine as I finished reading the letter. Surely someone was playing quite a good prank. This couldn’t be true. Obviously, ghosts don’t exist. Right?

I quickly looked up everything. I discovered that the MV Wilhelm Gustloff was a German cruise ship that sank in 1945 and over 8,000 people died. I then researched Josiah Shepard and found some of his social media accounts and what I found made me truly sick. I saw a handsome man with brown hair and blue eyes and then I found that he had taken a job on a fishing boat. What I found next truly unsettled me. He was swept overboard on an outing and was lost at sea. What the fuck? Everything seemed to line up in the letter. But still, anyone could’ve researched this and wrote that stuff down in the letter. A very elaborate prank. I gotta give it to them.

Anyway, a few years had passed since I found that letter. I came back to visit my parents during a week in the summer and we ended up taking their boat out. It was a beautiful day and I had my boyfriend with me at the time. We had left the shoreline behind and water was all that we saw for miles.

That’s when an unsettling fog crept over the water and left us all in chills. Off in the distance, I saw the outline of a giant cruise liner. I had a very bad feeling about it all. I told my dad to get us out of there. However, the ship continued to drift closer. I had a nauseating feeling in my stomach as it came into view.

That’s when I saw the words written on the bow. It read Wilhelm Gustloff. Then I saw a man standing on the side looking down at us. I recognized his brown hair and blue eyes and knew who he was immediately. It was the man who had written the letter. I had never felt more terrified in my entire life at that moment. From this point on, I knew the truth. Ghosts do exist.

The End.

Things continue to get stranger and stranger in this city. My name is Officer Hallie Everett and I’ve been a police officer for the past 5 years. When I first started, never would I have ever believed the things I saw in the line of duty. If the case of the mother murdering her daughter wasn’t enough. Then there was the kidnapping and murder of that poor woman. The boyfriend was devastated. We’ve also had an uptick in human trafficking. The girl in the latest kidnapping case was a close call. If it wasn’t for her mother finding her cellphone, we wouldn’t have been able to save her before they took her and god only knows what they would’ve done with her. However, this case… This is the strangest one yet.

I arrived on the scene to find a suicide. That much was clear. However, after further investigation, we found recorded videos. It appears that the man’s entire apartment was tapped with hidden security cameras. That is not unusual, but rather suspicious. We’ve also discovered he carried a hidden body cam. I and my fellow officers proceeded to watch the recordings and what follows is altogether the most unsettling thing I’ve ever seen. As the recordings start, the victim, a 28 male, with brown hair and blue eyes shows up in front of the camera.

“I don’t know how to explain the events of what happened before today. I’ll try to go over the details of my discovery. My name is Reece Adkins, I’m only 28 and up until recently, I lived a rather normal and boring life. I do live by myself in an apartment that’s not too cheap, but not too expensive. I work a job as an adjunct teacher at a local community college.

Here’s where things start to get strange. It all started a few months ago. I began to notice chunks of time missing from my memories. There were moments where I’d just blank out and when I came back to consciousness, I was somewhere where I had no idea how I got there. I even had a friend tell me they saw me near downtown, they tried to stop me to say hello, but I wouldn’t acknowledge them. I have no memory of the occasion.

There were times where I was standing in the middle of nowhere or in a bad part of town. I had no memory of what happened when I blacked out. At first, the blackouts happen very rarely. But as time carried on, they began happening more and more frequently. I went to see a doctor to see if there was something wrong with me. He had me get a few brain scans and found nothing out of the ordinary.

I started keeping a journal, however, the blackouts were happening more and more frequently. I finally decided to invest in a security system, placing hidden cameras all over my apartment, in my car, and even going to the extent of wearing a small hidden body camera. One way or another, I was going to figure out what was happening to me.

Oddly, weeks went by before another blackout. I woke up in the middle of a sandy area that I didn’t recognize. Fortunately, I was still wearing my camera. I had to walk for miles before getting back to any highway. After walking down the highway for what felt like hours, someone was kind enough to give me a ride back to my place. I quickly took the camera, and all the footage from all my hidden cameras and went through it all.

What I found made me sick to my stomach. It seemed the moment I blacked out I was in my apartment. I stood there for over 20 minutes before moving. I nearly jumped out of my seat when I looked over to the closet hidden camera and smiled. My eyes… They were entirely pitch black, devoid of any presence of who I am.

An unsettling feeling crept over me as the person that controlled my body waved at the camera. I truly had no idea what the fuck was going on. I began to walk out of the apartment. I quickly switched to the body cam footage. There I see myself walking for miles. I was downtown long after the sun went down. I continued to walk in the dark until I reached a building that looked rather shady. I entered the building. It was in terrible condition. The walls had holes and there wasn’t even carpet. I proceeded down a set of stairs to a dingy looking basement. There were more people down there. From what I could tell, they too had pitch-black eyes but it was hard to make out who they were, it was too dark.

They had a woman tied up and what looked like another person unconscious. They took the woman and circled around her. One of them drew a pentagon and a star within it around the woman as she cried and pleaded with them. Then I came up and grabbed a dagger as the rest of them chanted something I couldn’t quite understand.

What happened next made me vomit all over the floor of my apartment floor. I stabbed the woman. I stabbed her several times. I killed an innocent person. That wasn’t me. Was it? I forced myself to continue watching. What happened next is hard to explain. I’m not quite sure if I fully believe it myself.

A dark black portal appeared and sucked a luminescent glowing orb-like thing from the woman. She fell to the ground and her body withered up and practically looked like a mummy. Next, a dark black orb-like thing came out of the portal and went into the unconscious man. When he opened his eyes, they too were pitch black. He stood up and joined the rest of them. What they said next made me shiver. Words came out of their mouths and I understood them. “All hail Beelzebub.”

I soon left that building and continued on. I walked for a few more miles before I came across a woman standing on the street corner. My heart began to race as I watched myself walk up to her. I tried to close my eyes, but I couldn’t. I watched with trepid anxiety as I went up to the woman and grabbed her. I dragged her kicking and screaming down a dark alley. What I did to her I don’t want to repeat. I vomited again all over again. I continued to watch myself do even more horrendous things. The things I did were unspeakable. Eventually, I found myself walking out to the middle of nowhere before I collapsed. That’s where I woke up as the sun started to rise.

I’m recording all of this down and hopefully, someone will find it and can do something about it. I still don’t understand any of it. Something or someone is taking control of my body. That part is clear. I looked up this Beelzebub and discovered he is some kind of demon. To whoever finds this, I hope you do not have to bear the horrors of knowing through your body terrible things occurred. I hope you can do something about this. What I don’t know.

I cannot continue living knowing what had been done with my body even though I know it was not me. Therefore, these are my final words. If you are to see this, know that we are not alone. Demons are among us and they do exist. Watch the videos for yourself and you’ll see the proof I recorded. I hope you do not incur the same fate as I. Be vigilant.”

It ended there. We continued to watch the other videos and confirmed his story. None of us knew what to make of it. We investigated the house and found the dead body of the woman and it looked mummified. We also found the body of the prostitute and it was hardly recognizable. I can’t say whether or not I believe it all but I can’t deny the proof of the videos. We are to make a full investigation of what happened in the building. It is hard to identify those involved in the video. It was too dark to get any recognizable facial features. Besides, in the video, they didn’t look all that human. What’s worse is that I’m starting to see pitch black eyes everywhere I go in everyone I see. It’s hard to trust anyone after seeing those videos. This job is starting to wear on my sanity. I will do what I can, but it’s getting harder and harder to continue on. Especially after his last case. I’m thinking about putting in my resignation, but I don’t know if I can live a normal life after this. I have a hard time sleeping at night. If you’re reading this, take my advice and remain vigilant.

The End.

Remember, you’re never safe in the dark…

A quick note from Solaris Night:

This story is unlike my others because it is loosely based on a true story of a video interview I saw on Instagram. That being said, obviously, the characters within the story are fictional and created from my own imagination even though the events of the story are based on truth. I think it’s important to always remain vigilant. The world is a dark and dangerous place.

Lilly Ross

What I’m about to tell you is one of my worst fears that nearly came true. My name is Lilly Ross and I am a mother of 3 amazing children. What happened is proof that you must always stay aware of your surroundings. It all happened while I was at a grocery store with two of my 3 children. My oldest was at home, being at an age where he could watch himself. My younger 2 children are both girls 3 and 7.

I normally like to park near the back because getting the stroller out can be quite a hassle and I just like to do it where there aren’t a whole lot of other people so I’m not in the way. Anyway, I was getting my children out of the car, putting my youngest in the stroller while my older daughter waited impatiently in the car. That’s when I noticed a couple parked not far from me. They stayed in their car for the longest time and I couldn’t help but think they were watching me and my kids. At first, I thought they were going to offer help because I was clearly struggling with the stroller and they were staring at me, but after a few minutes, they just stayed in their car watching. I thought nothing of it at the time, however, once I got my youngest in the stroller and got my oldest out of the car, we made our way into the store and I noticed the couple get out behind me. They followed us into the store. Again, I thought nothing of it.

As we went about our way, picking up essential items, the couple continued to follow us, however, they didn’t appear to be shopping. They had nothing in their hands and they were clearly watching us. Whenever I looked over at them, they’d quickly glance away.

While I turned the corner and came into the next aisle, that’s when I heard them talking. They were clearly speaking about my children. I could hear them saying the details and characteristics of my kids. Brown hair, green eyes, one’s about 4 years old and the other’s about 7, both girls. My heart raced as I listened to their conversation. I was truly mortified. I thought for a second, that I wasn’t hearing them right, but when they turned the corner into our aisle, I saw the man talking on the phone and his eyes darted straight towards my kids before quickly glancing away.

It was at this point I realized the severity of the situation. I quickly pulled out my phone and called my husband. I told him exactly what was going on with clear panic in my voice. To make matters worse, he was at least an hour away for business. My heart was racing so fast, I felt like I was having a panic attack. I quickly took my kids and rushed for the checkout. The couple followed. I saw the man grab something off the shelf and made it for the checkout line behind me. Fortunately, a woman in front of me let me cut. Even though my kids were behaving well enough, she saw that I only had a few items and was very kind enough to let me go ahead of her.

I quickly checked out and rushed into the parking lot. I saw the couple discard their items and take off behind me with a brisk pace. To my horror, there was a big white van parked next to my car. I quickly put my older daughter in the car first and got my youngest out of the stroller and got her buckled in next. I considered leaving the stroller and items as I saw the couple approach. They practically circled the car. As I clicked open the back trunk to quickly throw my stroller and the few items I had bought, I lost sight of the couple. I was in a panic as I locked the doors to the car so they wouldn’t be able to take my kids without taking the keys from me. I heard car doors open and shut from the van. My heart was pounding inside my chest. My hands were shaking as I struggled to get the groceries in and quickly break down the stroller. I kept fumbling with the locks on the stroller as I kept looking up to see if the couple were still lurking.

An old man and a younger woman pulled up across on the other side of the rear of my car. I saw the old man’s eyes go wide and to my relief, he quickly shouted if I needed any help. I said yes immediately. As I turned around for the stroller I nearly had a heart attack. There were two men standing behind me. They backed away immediately as the old man and whom I guess was his caretaker or daughter quickly made their way over. The two men tried to act as if they were coming to help but quickly walked over to the white van, got in, and drove away. The couple also got into their car and drove off.

If it weren’t for that old man’s kindness, I could’ve lost my children that day. Looking back, there were so many things I could’ve done differently, but when you’re in the moment and filled with fear, you don’t act rationally. Since that day, I’ve started to take many precautions. I park as close as I can, I now carry mace and I’m in the process of getting a carry permit. I also should’ve called the police immediately. I will never put myself or my children in a situation like that ever again.

The End.

Remember, you’re never safe in the dark…

Paranormal, ghost, ghost stories, ghosts, the dead,

Speaking to the Dead

It had been 3 weeks since my girlfriend Amira took her own life. I still can’t believe she did it. She was so happy. We were both so happy together. Why would she have committed suicide when we had so many plans. It didn’t make sense. Nothing made sense anymore.

I tried to go on, but I couldn’t. I saw her everywhere. At school, I saw her decorated locker and remembered all the conversations we had together. It was there we made plans to take a year off after high school and travel, seeing the world.

Seeing her empty desk reminded me of all the times she let me cheat off her in class. Especially French class which she became quite fluent in. She was always the smart one. She always tried to get me to learn the material, but I was too stubborn and it was much easier to just copy her.

I went to the coffee shop we always attended after school, it felt hollow without her. Seeing her empty seat only made my already broken heart shatter into more pieces. There was a void inside my chest in her absence. We would spend hours in this coffee shop, discussing everything from my obsession with superheroes to her obsession with books. She’d always get a chai tea while I resorted to hot chocolate. I still remember the way she’d look at me as I went on and on about how Titan was the strongest superhero of them all. She’d just sip her tea and listen intently. Her shimmering brown eyes seemed to light up as I spoke. She’d occasionally tuck a loose string of her silky brown hair behind her ear.

I couldn’t get enough of her creamy angelic voice whenever she’d speak about her latest book obsession. She went into detail about every twist and turn she read about. I’d listen with enthusiasm as she explained why the ending was so perfect. She was perfect. She even started writing her own novel. Sadly she never finished it.

The only other person who seemed to understand my pain and truly know my loss was her mother Madeline Poole. I visited her quite often after Amira left this world. She’d make me tea, the same tea Amira loved. Then she’d tell me stories of what Amira was like growing up. How she was always such a curious child. Always questioning things and always had her nose in a book.

That’s Amira alright, I said. God, I missed her so much. Life wasn’t worth living without her. I still look at her social media accounts every day. I’d see all the pictures of us together and how happy she was. I don’t think I’ll ever truly understand why she left us.

One day after school I found myself on one of her social media accounts, watching a video of us together. We were at a cornfield maze. I remembered that day well. We had so much fun. We got a bit lost in the maze but enjoyed every minute of it before we picked out pumpkins and carved them later that night. She told me she had never felt happier in her life that day. We had our first kiss that night. I had driven her home and we sat in my car in her driveway. We both were nervous, I could tell. She looked over at me and I looked over at her. We slowly leaned in and our lips touched. She then whispered in my ear Mon Chéri which meant my dear in french. She continued to whisper that to me whenever we were alone and I called her Ma Chérie. It was our thing. No one else knew about it. I felt like I was reliving the memory when I got a message.

I nearly toppled over in my chair as I saw who it was from. It was from Amira. I couldn’t believe it. Was someone playing a prank on me? It wasn’t funny, that’s for sure. I swore if I found out who was behind the prank, I’d make them pay. I opened the message and it only had 2 words. Help me.

A sudden chill crept over my skin. I stared at the message for a long time before I pulled myself together. I quickly typed a reply. Look, whoever you are, you’re not funny. Knock it off!!!

I saw they were typing again. I was getting really angry. Who would dare hack into her account and play such a disgusting prank?

Patrick, please, I need your help!

It’s not funny! Stop playing around! I typed back.

Once again they were typing. I swear, I’m going to find out who’s doing this and when I do…

They sent another message and I froze. My hands became very sweaty and my heart started to race. It couldn’t be. That’s impossible.

The message read. Mon Chéri, remember the time we were at the cornfield maze? We got lost but we had so much fun. You drove me home that night and we kissed for the first time. Remember?

Could it really be her? No one else knows about what happened that night. Maybe she told someone about that night. I started typing again.

Who are you and how did you know that?

It’s me, Amira. Your Ma Chérie. Please, you have to believe me. I always let you cheat off my homework even after I tried to persuade you to do your own work. You have to believe me. I need your help.

I didn’t know what to say or even what to think. She knew things that only Amira and I knew. Could it really be her? She’s dead. I remember seeing her cold dead body in the casket during her funeral. I began typing. How is this possible?

I waited with sickening anticipation as she started to type. I don’t know, but you need to get my laptop. It has everything. You need to get it, Mon Chéri. Watch what’s on it. It has the truth.

What truth? What’s on the laptop? I typed furiously.

I have to go. She began typing again but stopped. I waited for almost an hour, but no other message came.

The next day after school, I went over to Amira’s house and was greeted by her mother. She smiled as she invited me in for tea. I sat down and we chatted a bit. She told me about a memory of Amira’s homecoming. How we both looked so adorable together all dressed up. She said she had been going over the pictures that day and fell into tears. I try my best to comfort her while thinking of a way to ask her if I could go to her room.

“Ms. Poole?”

“Oh, darling you can just call me Madeline,” she said.

“I was wondering if I could go up to Amira’s room and get her laptop,” I asked.

She looked up at me apprehensively. She seemed shocked that I would even ask that. “What would you want her laptop for?”

I had to quickly think of an excuse. I didn’t want to tell her that I could be talking to the dead ghost of her daughter over social media. That seemed crazy. I really thought I might’ve gone mad and I didn’t want to validate it. “She was writing a book and I wanted to finish it for her and publish it. I thought that she deserved some sort of recognition.”

She thought it over a bit before a sincere smile appeared on her face. “Yes, I think that would be nice. Amira would want that.”

She led me up to her room and let me inside. I noticed there were scuff marks on the door, but it didn’t seem all that odd. I knew Amira had argued with her mother sometimes. As we walked into her room, my breath caught. It was exactly the same as it had been while she was alive. I couldn’t fight the tears as I walked in. My emotions overwhelmed me and I found myself breaking down at the sight of all her things. Her mother did her best to comfort me. It took me a while to pull myself together. I found her laptop on her desk and she took it into her hands and hugged it close to her chest. She told me to be careful with it and if I found anything in it to let her know immediately. I nodded and promised I would. She reluctantly handed it to me. She held on, looking me in the eyes as I went to take it from her.

“Her things are all I have left of her. Please don’t mess with anything on her laptop. I want it left the way it is,” she said, with tears streaming down her eyes. I nodded and I promised her I wasn’t going to change anything on it. I just wanted to publish her novel.

She let go and hugged me. She walked me out and watched as I got into my car. I took one last look up at her as she stood at the door staring down at me. She seemed very reluctant to give me the laptop and I understood. It was a piece of her daughter she had given me.

I drove back home, plugged the laptop in, and booted it up. I came to the login screen which was password protected. I logged onto my social media account and messaged her, saying I had the laptop but it was password protected.

Her reply was instant. Moncheri

Of course. I quickly went back to her computer. After taking a deep breath I typed it in. It worked. I was taken to her desktop. I found her novel. I opened it to find she had actually completed it. Tears welled up as I began to read it. I read the entire thing that night. It was brilliant, but what I found typed at the end left me puzzled. It was a file extension. I searched her computer for the file and found it. Inside the file were a bunch of videos. There were 2 videos. One was dated the day before she died and the other was dated on the day she died.

I clicked the first video and her face popped up, but what she said made me sick.

“I think my mother is sick in the head,” she said in a very scared and panicked tone. “I don’t know who to tell about this, but she needs help. She found out that I was planning on leaving after I graduated high school. She was angry about it. She said I couldn’t leave her. I don’t like the look in her eyes. She’s really starting to scare me.”

She quickly looked over her shoulder. “I have to go.”

I was speechless. I quickly pulled up the next video and watched it. Once again Amira’s face came into view. She looked truly frightened. “I think my mother is going to kill me. She’s gone deranged. She says I can’t leave her. She says that I have to stay here with her forever. I told her she’s crazy. She won’t let me leave the house. She took my phone away and shut the internet off. I have no way of getting help! I’m scared. I’m really scared.”

There was a pounding noise in the background. Amira looked behind her and then back at the computer. There were tears in her eyes. I felt this nauseating feeling in my stomach as I watched in horror. “I have to go, she’s trying to get into my room.”

“Who are you talking to? You can’t be talking to that Patrick boy, I have your phone and shut down the internet. Open the door!” I heard Amira’s mom shout behind her. “You need to stay with me. You can’t leave me. You’re all I have left. I won’t let you leave.”

She starts to cry and panic. “I have to go. If you find this, it might be too late. Please, tell someone.”

The video doesn’t stop there. It shows Madeline breaking in. There was a struggle. I wanted to look away, but I couldn’t stop watching. Amira tried to pull away from her mother, she tripped and fell. Her head smacked hard against her desk and there was a loud crack. Madeline screamed. I felt sick. I bent down and found the waste paper basket and threw up. The video continued as Madeline sobbed. It was clear that Amira was dead. So it wasn’t a suicide. Then how did the police determine it was? I continued watching to find Madeline coming to her senses. She rushed away and came back with rope. She a noose to the ceiling fan. She strung up her dead daughter, then she pulled her down and in a hysterical fit, she called the police.

As the police arrived, she told them a huge lie. That she broke in to find her daughter was hanging there. They ruled it a suicide. The video goes on for a while longer before it cuts off.

Just then I saw someone pull into my driveway. It was Ms. Poole. My heart froze. Could she suspect that the truth is on the laptop? I quickly called the police.

I heard downstairs my mother answered the door and invited Ms. Poole in. My heart tried to leap out of my chest. I told the police everything and how Ms. Poole was downstairs. They said they’d send someone over.

I heard Ms. Poole asked my mother if I was home. She told her that I was upstairs. I heard her footsteps as they climbed the stairs. My stomach turned and I felt sick as my mother knocked on the door. I quickly shut the laptop “Honey? Amira’s mother is here. She wants to speak with you.”

My mother opened the door and she let Amira’s mom in. I tried to compose myself. I tried to act normal. I tried to get my breathing under control as Amira’s mom stepped in. She looked at me and then at the laptop. “Were you able to get in?”

“No, it’s password-protected,” I lied quickly. I saw a sense of relief cross her face. She killed the love of my life. Her own daughter.

“I think I like to have it back,” she said.

“No,” I spat out, grabbing the laptop.

“Honey, I know how you feel, but it’s not yours,” my mother said behind her.

“Sweetie, please. I just… I didn’t realize how much it meant to me…” Ms. Poole said. The look in her eyes said otherwise. She knew what might be on there. I could see it on her face.

“Liar!” I spat out to both my mother and Ms. Poole’s shock.

“Madeline, I apologize. Patrick hasn’t been himself ever since Amira passed away,” my mother said.

“I understand, now just give me the laptop,” she demanded, holding out her hand.

I saw the police lights in the distance. “I lied. I was able to get into her laptop. You wouldn’t believe what I found.”

Her eyes went wide and her face contorted to both horror and anger. With the laptop clenched in my hands, I pushed past her and bolted downstairs as the police arrived. I ran outside and told the woman officer everything except the part where Amira messaged me.

They took both Madeline Poole and myself to the police station. I showed them the videos Amira made and they arrested Madeline. The news was all over the internet by the morning. Psycho mother murdered her daughter and made it look like a suicide.

None of it made me feel any better. In fact, it made me feel worse. I couldn’t sleep. I felt horrible about it all. I never would’ve guessed all that was going on. Ms. Poole seemed so kind. Why couldn’t Amira have told me? I would’ve protected her. I didn’t understand any of it.

A little after all that happened I received a message from Amira. I quickly opened it.

Thank you, mon chéri. I wish I could spend one more day with you. I love you. I want you to live a happy life. Will you do that for me?

Tears fought their way out of my eyes as I read her message. I love you too, ma chérie. But we can still talk, right?

I waited as my heart ached while she typed.

I wish we could, but unfortunately, I can’t stay here any longer. I love you so much. Please forget about me and find someone to be happy with. That’s what I want for you. Promise me you’ll still travel.

Please don’t go. I can’t be happy without you. I don’t want to live in a world without you in it

Oh, my sweet mon chéri, I would love nothing more than to stay here with you, but I can’t. You have to let go of me. Please live a full life for me. I love you. Goodbye Patrick.

I broke down and cried. She’s gone. She’s really gone. It took me a long time before I could pull myself together. I saved her laptop. I ended up publishing her book in her name. After I graduated, I did exactly what we planned to do and traveled. I got postcards from every place she wanted to visit. It felt like she was there with me. I hope wherever she is, she’s at peace.

The End.

Remember, you’re never safe in the dark…
